AAALI: An AIDS-free generation is possible

NHCOA is one of three national Hispanic/Latino partners of the CDC’s Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI), a multi-year national communication initiative to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS among diverse communities. Thanks to medical breakthroughs, HIV can now be treated as a chronic disease with proper care and adherence to continuous treatment. Although there are still roughly 56,000 new infections each year, this number has remained stagnant for several years. Given that 1 in 5 people living with HIV in the United States aren’t aware of their status, we have a tremendous opportunity to promote awareness and testing as a way to make an AIDS-free generation a reality.
Almost a year ago, the White House announced the first-ever National HIV/AIDS Strategy, an aggressive, coordinated plan with clear goals for 2015:
- Lower the annual number of new infections by 25%
- Reduce HIV transmission by 30%
- Increase the percentage of people living with HIV who know their serostatus from 79% to 90%
Last week, AIDS.gov posted a video conversation with White House Office of National AIDS Policy Director, Dr. Grant Colfax on how the Administration is working to implement this national strategy. Watch the video and learn how you can contribute to an AIDS-free generation.
