In May we celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM). First established in 1963, the celebration is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), along with the National Center to Reframe Aging (NCRA) and the Diverse Elders Coalition (DEC). The 2023 theme is Aging Unbound, which gives us the opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how communities can fight stereotypes.

During the month of May, it is proposed to highlight the positive aspects of aging and the everyday life of older adults to highlight their abilities, independence and commitment to their communities, as they feel included and productive in society. In addition, to recognize their contributions and celebrate their achievements in order to reduce prejudice and discrimination in this community.

The celebration also aims to reaffirm the commitment we all have to older adults, recognize the diversity in this population, and strengthen the role we play as a society in making it inclusive. The OAM is a moment to highlight important achievements in the struggle for the visibility of older adults and to accept the challenge of transforming our thoughts about aging.

While it is true that Older Americans Month is celebrated throughout May, all individuals and organizations are encouraged to continue their commitment and actions on behalf of older adults throughout the year. ACL suggests some ways we can all participate in the celebration regardless of age:

  • Seize the opportunity for change. Find a new passion, go on an adventure, and push your limits without letting age define you. Invite creativity and determination into your life by trying new activities in your community that bring you more growth, joy, and energy.
  • Explore the rewards of aging. With age comes knowledge, which provides insight and confidence to understand and experience the world more deeply. Continue to expand that knowledge by reading, listening, attending classes, and engaging in creative activities.
  • Stay involved in your community. We all benefit when we are connected and involved. Stay active by volunteering, working, mentoring, participating in social clubs, and taking part in activities at your local senior center or elsewhere in the community.
  • Build relationships. As an essential component of wellness, relationships can improve your quality of life by introducing new ideas and unique perspectives. Invest time in people to discover deeper connections with family, friends and community members.

These recommendations can be the starting point for committing to inclusive, less-judgmental aging from our own experience. It is important to recognize the role older adults play in society and how we can do our part to reduce stereotypes of older adults.

Happy Older Americans Month!
