On November 8th, 2023, NHCOA’s President and CEO, Dr. Yanira Cruz launched her new book, A Leader’s Perspective. A compilation of stories from courageous women leaders who faced and overcame barriers, and stereotypes imposed by society. The launching of this book promotes the importance of women in leadership positions.
Dr. Cruz has developed a nuanced perspective as a woman in a leadership position. She was born in Jucuapa, department of Usulutan, in El Salvador, and at age nine immigrated to Washington DC. As a woman, Latina, and immigrant, Dr. Cruz knows well the barriers keeping women of color from positions of leadership in any career.
She shares this perspective with the many other women leaders whom she encountered throughout her career. With A Leader’s Perspective, Dr. Cruz invites us to learn about the experiences of these esteemed leaders and to know the same inspiration she finds in them, as she accounts for the manner in which they successfully broke through these barriers for the sake of advancing equity.
With the publishing of her book, Dr. Cruz hopes that many other women will find their way to leadership roles. Believing that women are integral to any community, and to any mission, Dr. Cruz intends for this book to be a call to action, not just for appreciation of the past but for an ambitious future. In reading A Leader’s Perspective, Dr. Cruz hopes that many more women will find themselves working in leadership roles, in order to further the progress of fields like gerontology, geriatrics, politics, and more.
