NHCOA Supports Kidney PATIENT Act for Equitable Care

by nhcoa_media | May 17, 2024 | Press Releases

The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) releases the following statement in support of the Kidney PATIENT Act, a legislative effort aimed at delaying the inclusion of Phosphate Lowering Therapies (PLTs) in the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) payment bundle managed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS):

“We applaud Senators Representatives Ann M. Kuster (D-NH), Carol D. Miller (R-WV), Terri A. Sewell (D-AL), Donald G. Davis (D-NC), Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY), John Joyce (R-PA), A. Drew Ferguson IV (R-GA), Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Blake D. Moore (R-UT), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Jodey C. Arrington (R-TX), Henry C. ‘Hank’ Johnson Jr. (D-GA), and Larry Bucshon (R-IN) for working to protect dialysis patients’ access to oral phosphate lowering therapies. Given that Hispanic individuals, particularly older adults, are disproportionately affected by kidney disease, the Kidney PATIENT Act is essential in addressing these health disparities and improving equitable access to healthcare services,” said Dr. Yanira Cruz, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA). “This crucial legislation will ensure that end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients receive the comprehensive care they need, regardless of age or income.”
