The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) will convene a roundtable discussion and a training seminar <\/strong>surrounding new developments in the world of aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, March 16th, we will host a roundtable titled, \u201cThe Realities of Older Adults in Brazil<\/strong>,\u201d at Mina Girais, Brazil. This discussion is made in partnership with Solidaridade Todos Juntos Sempre, a Brazilian nonprofit. Together, our aim in facilitating this worthwhile discussion is to exchange knowledge between experts: political officials and community leaders. \u201cThe Realities of Older Adults in Brazil\u201d roundtable, will bring attention to issues of health, elder abuse and fraud, and economic security<\/strong>. The NHCOA team is excited to gather these hugely important perspectives on issues central to our work<\/strong>. We have no doubt this event will prove integral to our own strategies on family caregiving in Latin America, and increase awareness across Hispanic and Latino communities everywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the importance of this event, President and CEO of NHCOA, Dr. Yanira Cruz<\/strong> spoke of her hopes and intentions:
\u201cOur hope with this convention of thought leaders in Brazil, is to highlight how important it is to address the needs of older adults. These are people who took care of us, and we have a moral responsibility to do the same for them. The way in which a society treats its most vulnerable is an indicator of its very character. We hope that our own knowledge and experience will be useful to those who advocate for older adults in Brazil, and that likewise we will be able to learn from them so that we can continue to improve the lives of older adults across the Americas.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Rosa Werneck, the President of ONG Solidariedade Todos Juntos Sempre<\/strong> holds the similar perspective on the importance of this event: \u201cThis event will help people become aware that older adults are not invisible people in our society. It is also important to highlight several vulnerable situations that exist, that the right to human dignity in relation to the elderly always prevails<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, March 17th, NHCOA will also hold an in-person training on caregiving. We are excited to announce this training session as the next in our series, \u201cWomen Leaders and Caregivers Training.<\/strong>\u201d We first launched this series of trainings in early 2023 with one session in El Salvador, and another in the United States. Titled, \u201cCaregiving Training: Caring for the Caregiver,\u201d this session will focus on providing caregivers tools and resources to help them manage and overcome the challenges of their role<\/strong>. With an emphasis on self-care practices, our goals are for caregivers to start good habits for themselves that will better serve their mental health, and to encourage a deeper understanding of the role they take on for older adults. It\u2019s an important job, and at times a heavy weight to carry, so those who take on the caregiving of an older adult absolutely require our support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training will also feature several speakers with expert knowledge and experience in the area of caregiving.<\/strong> These talks will include information on elder abuse, public policies concerning older adults in Brazil, caring for a loved one at home, entrepreneurship amongst caregivers, and the crucial matter of a caregiver\u2019s own mental, emotional, and physical health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
