What steps are we as individuals taking to ensure that we are happy and healthy? Are we experiencing greater degrees of loneliness or social isolation? How can we take easy and convenient steps to stay connected with our communities, families, and friends?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f4d568b2ba335b3918cd6ffda370e968 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Why are social isolation and loneliness a big deal?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13495514a356012aae362ffba061296e wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">In recent years, and especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, social isolation and loneliness have become prevalent across the United States. We\u2019re far more educated and aware of the dangers of sickness, and how isolation and social distancing can keep us safe from severe illness. And make no mistake,<strong> it\u2019s good that we\u2019re taking precautions for our health, but we also have to remember that it doesn\u2019t stop with our physical health.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4975d2a7b9d9b53539bc944593195d61 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">In fact, social isolation and loneliness have been linked to a heightened risk for a variety of conditions and diseases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">High blood pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Heart disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Obesity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Weakened immune function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Cognitive decline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Dementia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-252dc940faf5a37d961a6a8af950a903 wp-block-paragraph\">Older Adults have also been identified as one of the demographics most at risk for social isolation and loneliness. Due to certain limiting factors like living alone, being less physically able, living far away from family, and language barriers, <strong>older adults face a heavier burden in avoiding the cognitive decline and physical illness that can come with social isolation and loneliness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e65d77b544502c5edfd420345c28b3d8 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>What steps can we take to avoid feeling lonely or isolated?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d24dc1d86897d59b724aa3a753a6bec7 wp-block-paragraph\">It may sound simple or obvious, but<strong> the best ways to avoid social isolation and loneliness, will involve staying connected with your friends, family, or community<\/strong>. Independent activities can be rewarding, but they lack the kind of stimulation and connection that helps eliminate social isolation and loneliness, and all the risks that come with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-43c0ce1bd00990dc80fcc37eec863412 wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways to find connection with others, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-34c636569f145d3eb76d4d22c19018b2 wp-block-paragraph\">\u29bf <strong>Routine Phone or Video Calls: <\/strong>It can be hard to catch our loved ones at a moment\u2019s notice for a phone call, facetime, or videocall. Setting a routine is an easy way to account for your different schedules, by picking a day and time to regularly check-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b293b34a89f44bcbaa510bc386cd5f92 wp-block-paragraph\">\u29bf <strong>In-person or Online Classes:<\/strong> Finding a hobby or interest that you want to learn more about is a great way to connect. You\u2019ll find people with similar interests, who may be discovering this new activity at the same time, have useful tips to offer, or even be looking for new connections too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-284ebbd44fc8126b761faf4ae01e8cd3 wp-block-paragraph\">\u29bf <strong>Faith Based Communities:<\/strong> Whatever religion or denomination you may subscribe to, there are likely houses of worship or meetings happening near you. They\u2019re likely to be full of people who are eager to engage in spirituality and conversation with like-minded others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bcda9c9e96968f0824993d47b19e2620 wp-block-paragraph\">\u29bf <strong>Outside Physical Activity<\/strong>: It can be as simple as taking a walk through the park, or around the block. Having a reason to regularly leave our homes without an errand or obligation can help us feel more connected to the world around us, even it\u2019s just our neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-07edbb5fee10541b39615662b4213e0a wp-block-paragraph\">Finding opportunities may feel daunting, especially if you\u2019re not accustomed to searching the internet. If that\u2019s the case for you, look to public facilities like public libraries, recreational centers, and senior centers.
