Months prior to the Eaton wildfire, the east coast saw brutal devastation with the impact of <em>Hurricane Helene<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">While the scourge wildfires and tropical storms are nothing new, the particular strength of these natural disasters <strong>serves as a reminder to us all to be prepared for such disasters, specifically as they pertain to whatever region we find ourselves living in<\/strong>, within the United States. No one should lose their loved ones or their homes to a natural disaster, and no one should be expected to improvise an effective shelter or evacuation plan under the panic of one such event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">The<strong> National Hispanic Council on Aging <\/strong>urges our communities and constituents to <strong>consider what an effective plan for natural disasters looks like<\/strong>, and what it can do to relieve us of worst-case scenarios in the aftermath of a natural disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>What should you expect?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">First, <strong>consider what disasters are most typical or likely for your region<\/strong>. Across the United States, natural disasters are widely varied\u2013wildfires, tropical storms, tornadoes, winter storms, and more. For tips specialized to each variety, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/ready.gov\">Ready.gov<\/a>! <strong>You should also consider any local alert systems that you can subscribe to<\/strong>. Emergency Alerts will reach you regardless of any subscription, but local alerts will often cover early stages of an event, before it can be considered a natural disaster, like the beginnings of a tropical storm, or snowfall ahead of a severe winter storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Assemble a Kit!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">Next, and perhaps most importantly, <strong>assemble a kit of supplies<\/strong>. If your kit reflects a plan to take shelter, then these items will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;1 Gallon of Water per person<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;Non-perishable food<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;Flashlight<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;Extra batteries<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;First aid kit<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-15 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">If your plan involves evacuating from your home and the general region, it may be hard to prepare these items for easy transportation. However, there are <strong>several items that are absolutely important when evacuating<\/strong>, as they are necessary in applying for FEMA benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;A form of <strong>ID<\/strong>, like your driver\u2019s license, Social Security Card, passport, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Property Records<\/strong>, like a lease, deed, or record of an insurance policy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-18 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Personal Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-20 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">Aside from these necessities, there are a few areas of concern that will vary from person to person. <strong>Older adults and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to consider what their medical needs may be<\/strong>. Are there any prescriptions you need that might otherwise be hard to obtain in a natural disaster? Are there any treatment plans that you\u2019ll need to continue during what could be a multiple-day long evacuation or shelter-in-place? Review these concerns, and try your best to <strong>create an effective plan that accommodates for them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-21 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>Older adults and people with disabilities should also consider how they will evacuate if they need to do so<\/strong>. Many older adults no longer drive, or own a vehicle, and as such will need to consider <strong>how they will manage to evacuate in a safe and timely fashion<\/strong>.
