Dr. Octavio N. Martínez has made important contributions to our nation by being a strong voice on the importance of addressing mental health among populations, especially in vulnerable populations. A native Texan and licensed psychiatrist, Dr. Octavio N. Martinez, Jr. is the fifth Executive Director to lead the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health since its creation in 1940 at The University of Texas at Austin. As the executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, he is able to impact and make a difference in the field of mental health and behavioral health.
Dr. Martinez holds an appointment of Senior Associate Vice President within the university’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement; he is also a clinical professor in the university’s School of Social Work; and holds an adjunct professor appointment at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry.
In addition to his administrative and academic duties, he has formerly served on the IOM’s Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education and currently serves on the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services to the Secretary of Health.
He is a recipient of the 2015 Psychiatric Excellence Award from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians. Also, he was awarded a Shining Lights Award for Excellence in Hispanic Mental Health Advocacy and Leadership in 2012 among many other titles and awards.
As a former Chairman of the NHCOA´s Board of Directors, Dr. Octavio Martinez has and continues to provide tremendous contributions to NHCOA. Over the years, his insight, commitment, and leadership continue to be invaluable to the organization and its constituents. His wealth of experience and knowledge are tremendous assets to NHCOA´s work in improving the lives of Hispanic older adults, their families, and caregivers.
NHCOA recognizes Dr. Martinez’s work in mental health by becoming a fundamental professional in this field. His countless contributions continue to make its mark on the improvement of the quality of life of the Hispanic community and ensuring that older adults can age in the best possible health.
