NHCOA Statement on National HIV Testing Day

Washington, DC – Dr. Yanira Cruz, National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) President and CEO, made the following statement regarding National HIV Testing Day:

“Three decades ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the first cases of a deadly virus that we have been fighting to eradicate ever since. Back when it was first identified, HIV/AIDS was branded as a disease that only plagued a certain type of person, creating a plethora of stigmas around it.

“However, we know now that the face of HIV is unidentifiable. Anyone can carry the virus regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, background, profession, religious belief, or sexual orientation.

“That is why NHCOA has partnered with the Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative to break down the stigmas and build channels of dialogue so that the most at-risk communities can address the issue while contribute to reducing the incidence of infection.

“One of the main ways to avoid getting infected is by getting routinely tested, which is why NHCOA encourages all Hispanic older adults, their families, and caregivers to take the opportunity to know their HIV status on National HIV Testing Day. Testing is simple, safe, and confidential. The more preventative measures we take, the healthier we will be.”

Declaración de NHCOA Sobre el Día Nacional de la Prueba del VIH

Washington, DC – Dra. Yanira Cruz, presidenta del Consejo Nacional Hispano para Adultos Mayores (NHCOA), hizo las siguientes declaraciones sobre el Día Nacional de la Prueba del VIH:

“Hace tres décadas, los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés), reportaron los primeros casos de un virus mortal, y desde entonces hemos estando luchando para erradicarlo. Desde que fue identificado, el VIH/SIDA ha sido catalogado como una enfermedad que solo afecta a cierto tipo de persona, lo cual ha fomentado mucho estigmas con respecto al virus.

“Sin embargo, ahora sabemos que el VIH no discrimina. Cualquier persona, independientemente de su edad, etnicidad, género, profesión, creencia religiosa u orientación sexual, puede portar el virus.

“Es por esto que NHCOA ha formado una alianza con el Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative para eliminar estos estigmas y crear líneas de comunicación para que las comunidades más vulnerables puedan enfrentar este tema a la vez que se reduce la tasa de infección.

“Una de las maneras principales que podemos evitar infección es hacerse la prueba rutinariamente. NHCOA alienta a todos los adultos mayores hispanos, sus familias y sus cuidadores para que conozcan su estatus en este Día Nacional de la Prueba del VIH. Hacerse la prueba es sencillo, seguro y confidencial. Mientras medidas preventivas tomamos, lo más sanos estaremos”.
