Washington, DC- Many communities face unique challenges that can make access to mental health care more difficult. Minorities suffer from a lack of appropriate support to help them receive treatment related to mental health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to poor mental health care accessibility, many Hispanic/Latinos who are diagnosed with a mental illness may feel shame or fear due to the myths that surround mental diseases and because of that, they prefer to seek help from other sources, such as spiritual leaders or homemade remedies to cope with negative emotions.

However, minorities and multicultural communities need to receive the proper care and information to overcome the cultural barrier that surrounds the treatment of mental illnesses. Cultural competence can allow health care professionals to understand the cultural influences that might affect health outcomes in Latinos to provide solutions for their needs.

To address that need, NHCOA will host a virtual town hall titled: “Tips on Keeping your Mental Health Strong” to provide information and resources on mental health, as well as to reinforce key mental health-related concepts. The event will be held on  June 13th, 2021 at 2:00 pm (EST), and will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the resources available to care for mental health, especially for Latino older adults and caregivers.

The virtual event will focus on the current situation regarding the mental health of Latinos/Hispanics and the impact of the lack of health insurance, chronic poverty, lack of housing, poor nutrition, discrimination, and anti-immigrant violence against them across the United States.
