Latino Empowerment: Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa

by nhcoa_media | Nov 5, 2026 | Blog

Latino empowerment takes many forms, from education and professional achievement to scientific innovation and community leadership. As the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) concludes this year’s Latino Empowerment campaign, we are proud to recognize Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, an internationally recognized neurosurgeon and researcher whose career reflects the importance of perseverance, education, and expanding opportunities for future generations.

Born in Mexicali, Mexico, Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa immigrated to the United States at the age of 19 in pursuit of a better future. After arriving in California, he worked as a farmworker, welder, and painter while learning English and continuing his education. His determination led him to the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, before attending Harvard Medical School, graduating cum laude.

Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa built a distinguished career in neurosurgery, beginning at Johns Hopkins University, where he became a professor of neurosurgery and oncology, and director of the Brain Tumor Program. He is recognized for his expertise in treating complex brain tumors and advancing surgical techniques that help protect critical brain functions. He also leads research focused on understanding brain cancer and developing new approaches to treatment.

His professional contributions extend beyond patient care and scientific research. Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa has authored seven books and published more than 500 peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has also mentored more than 300 postgraduate students and neurosurgery residents, helping prepare future generations of medical professionals.

In addition, he is the co-founder and president of Mission: BRAIN (Bridging Resources and Advancing International Neurosurgery), a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to neurosurgical education and resources internationally. His commitment to mentorship and medical education reflects the importance of sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for others.

Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa’s journey offers an opportunity to reflect on a powerful aspect of Latino empowerment: the ability to overcome barriers, pursue educational opportunities, and contribute to fields where Latino representation and leadership matter. His accomplishments demonstrate how professional success creates pathways for others to learn, grow, and make meaningful contributions.

The National Hispanic Council on Aging is proud to recognize leaders whose professional journeys highlight perseverance, education, and service. Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa’s contributions to medicine, scientific research, and mentorship create a shining example of empowering one’s community.

Congratulations to Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa on his remarkable career and continued contributions to medicine and education.
