Storytelling Initiative

Voices of Older Adults
Amplifying Lived Experiences to Shape Policy
A Storytelling Initiative by NHCOA, made possible with support from The SCAN Foundation.
Every day, Latino older adults and their family caregivers must make decisions about housing, nutrition, healthcare, and income support that most policymakers never experience firsthand. Voces de los Mayores/Voices of Older Adults exists to address this issue by centering the stories of those with firsthand experience in discussions of policy.
Through this initiative, the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) is collecting video testimonials from Latino older adults and caregivers across the country who rely on long-term services and supports (LTSS), the essential systems that enable people to age with dignity and remain at home.
Why These Stories Matter?
Policy decisions about benefits may seem abstract until you hear how they affect someone’s daily life. By sharing real experiences, this project:
Amplifies
Amplifies the voices of underrepresented groups in national issues that directly affect them.
Builds
Builds trust between communities and the institutions meant to serve them.
Equips
Equips advocates and lawmakers with a clearer picture of how policy translates into lived reality.
Strengthens
Strengthens and sustains LTSS systems so older adults can safely age at home.
Topics
NHCOA’s trained interviewers sat down with older adults and caregivers to discuss housing, SSI, nutrition, and caregiving—four issues that directly shape their daily lives.
