Comedian, actor, producer, screenwriter, businessman and film, theater and television director, Eugenio González Derbez is considered, according to Variety magazine, as the “most influential Hispanic man in the entertainment industry”. This recognition is the result of his decades-long career, which began in Mexico and now expands to the rest of Latin America and the United States. In the US, he has garnered many achievements in the industry, landing important film projects, which have earned him recognition in Hollywood. In 2016 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, joining a hundred Latinos who have received this recognition.

The son of leading actress Silvia Derbez and publicist Eugenio González Salas, Eugenio Gónzalez Derbez was born on September 2, 1961 in Mexico City. When he reached adolescence, he decided to study Film Directing at the Mexican Institute of Cinematography, an education that was the beginning of his successful career in television and film. After completing his training as a film director, Eugenio entered Televisa’s Centro de Educación Artística where he studied acting. Over time, he was recognized mainly as a humorist and as a creator of comic characters for television programs.

Before reaching the important stages and creating his comedy programs, Eugenio began his career in the program En Familia con Chabelo, participating as a hostess, interacting with the audience and contestants. He also participated in weekly programs such as ¡Anabel! (1988) and later starred in the telenovela No tengo madre (1997), which had 40 episodes.

Derbez’s career took off in the comedy shows he wrote, produced and directed called Al derecho y al Derbez (1993-1995), which brought him fame and launched his career as a television comedian. It was followed by Derbez en cuando (1999), XHDRBZ (2002-2007), Vecinos (2005-2006) and La familia P. Luche.

His feature film debut “No se aceptan devoluciones” (2013), which he produced, directed and starred in, achieved a box office gross of 100 million dollars, breaking several records in Mexico and the United States, consolidating itself as one of the highest grossing films in the history of Mexican cinema. This film was the turning point for Eugenio, opening the doors to new opportunities in important roles in Hollywood film projects, as an actor, but also as director and producer of his own films.

His film projects began to receive attention with the films Sangre de mi sangre (2007) and La misma luna (2007). He subsequently participated in films such as Jack and Jill (2011), Girl in Progress (2012), Miracles from Heaven (2016), Sandy Wexler (2017), How to be a Latin Lover (2017), Geostorm (2017), Overboard (2018), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018), Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2018) and most recently, Coda (2021). Other films in which Eugenio has participated, as a voice actor, have been in Mulan (1998), Dr. Dolittle (1998), Shrek (2001 to 2010), Hellboy 2 and the Golden Army (2008) Yes Sir! (2008), A Chihuahua in Beverly Hills (2008) The Secret Life of Your Pets (2016 and 2019) The Grinch (2018), Angry Birds 2 (2019).

It has certainly been a career with ups and downs. A Latino who has worked alongside other successful Hispanics such as Eva Mendes, Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek, Michael Peña and other Hollywood stars, such as: Adam Sandler, Rob Shneider, Anna Farris, Morgan Freeman, Hellen Mirren, Gerard Butler, among others.

IMDB, the most important film and television database in the world, defines Eugenio Derbez as one of the most influential creative forces in Latin America, and is the most recognized actor among the Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. and assures that his voice is recognized in the dubbing world as he is the Spanish voice of recognized big screen characters such as “The Grinch” and “Donkey” from Shrek, among others.

Eugenio Derbez is still considered one of Mexico’s most brilliant comedians. An entire region has grown up with his programs and his characters have transcended generations, for that and more Eugenio is a source of Latino pride.
