The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) condemns the acts of violence perpetrated yesterday at an LGBTQA+ nightclub in Colorado and stands in solidarity with the victims of this heartbreaking and horrible event.

On the night of November 19th, a 22-year-old gunman entered and opened fire at Club Q, an  LGBTQA+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The suspect killed at least five people and injured 18 others until two heroic people inside the club confronted and stopped him.

Even though the shooting only lasted a few minutes and the suspect was arrested, it took the lives of five people, left victims in critical conditions and has wounded an entire community forever.

What happened yesterday has not yet been confirmed as a hate crime but acts of violence against the LGBTQA+ community NEED TO STOP. Sadly this is not the first time the community has experienced violent acts like this one. NHCOA urges and encourages local, state and national governments not only take swift action to bring justice to Club Q victims but also to take serious actions into preventing and stopping any acts of discrimination, hate speech, harassment, prejudice and violence against the LGBTQA+ community, their allies and loved ones.

Our country needs to guarantee LGBTQA+ members safety and their freedom to express themselves however they want at any time and any place. The community deserves to enjoy a life without the fear of being attacked. LGBTQA+ people deserve rights, protection and freedom like any other citizen of the United States of America.

This tragic event also calls for a more strict and safe gun control in the U.S. Gun violence has tormented our country for far too long. Is time that policymakers take action to ensure gun control in all the states, maximizing the protection of human rights and creating a safe environment for everyone, especially those at greatest risk. Our country has suffered enough already. It’s time to make reforms to stop gun violence and protect Americans’ right to live without fear.

Our hearts break for the devastated loved one of the victims at Club Q. We stand with you in this great pain and sorrow now and in the days to come. Our thoughts remain with them, the loved ones killed, those injured, and the countless traumatized.
